Onward to graduation

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

This Sunday is graduation. It’s going to be strange after seven years of school to know that I don’t have to move into a new studio in the fall and start school work again.

It’s definitely an interesting time to graduate with a Masters in Architecture seeing as how the industry we thought we would be working in is largely frozen waiting for the worst of the recession to end. Sunday will be both an exciting and depressing day for all of us architects graduating. I wonder what other industries we will find jobs in? What other fields could benefit from our advanced problem solving skills? Where will we all be in a year…

the silence of late nights

Friday, April 24th, 2009

2 Weeks from today I have my final defense of my Master’s thesis. It’s open to the public and  if you want to attend the details are:

May 8th, 2009

5:00 – 6:00pm

Room 170 – School of Architecture and Urban Planning building (2131 E Hartford Ave, Milwaukee, WI)

It’s intriguing to me to look at my post archives and see how many posts I have had the time to do for each month the past few years. In a way it’s a gauge for how busy I am. Which is no wonder why it’s been so silent on this blog the past month. I hope to see and talk to everyone on and/or after the 8th. Wish me luck!

The past month

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

It’s been the better part of a month since I last posted. I have to admit it was not because I was too busy. I have been working on my thesis but I have not been as busy as I have been in the past. No. I have not been posting because I am in a state of political shock. I cannot believe the things that are happening to our country. I feel as if it’s already been four years of this communist jargon and destruction, but alas it has only been four weeks! Will we still be the home of the free four years from now? We barely made it through the past eight years of socialism… how can liberty survive four years of communism on top of that?

On a more upbeat note, my thesis is coming along nicely. We created a website for our thesis and I am pleased with the graphic quality of it. You can check it out at www.ReedStreetYards.com. The progress page will be updated throughout the semester. We are currently in the initial master planning phase and are completing our 40″x60″ site and context model. Yeah, it’s huge…. it’s 1:50 scale meaning every inch is equal to fifty feet. Put another way the model represents a 2000 foot by 3000 foot area in the real world. We will be throwing an animation of us building it on our thesis site’s progress page soon.

Hmm… The only other item that’s really changed the last month is Chelsea’s continuing fall in the EPL rankings. We have had an unfortuante number of ties and loses which have translated to fourth place overall. Man U is currently in first with Liverpool and Aston Villa close behind. Now I don’t want to curse us, but at this point in the season we really have no chance at moving back into first. We need to pray that over the final 3 months we can manage to hold onto fourth so we still have a chance at qualifying for Champions League play.

2009: year of endings

Thursday, January 1st, 2009

2009. I’ve been waiting for this year for what seems like an eternity. It’s going to be a year of endings for me. In May I’ll finish my thesis and graduate with my Master’s degree. Additionally, I’m working on three projects which will become separate companies, all with prototypes or beta launches before 2009 is over. Most importantly for my health, I’m finally going to be able to put an end to never having time to sleep, workout, or have a personal life, all of which I have missed these long past six years of relentless deadlines and all-nighters. I am so happy you are finally here 2009! And I wish anyone reading this they can feel the same level of excitement. Happy New Year :)

P.S. To get excited about the new year it may be neccessary to temporarily forget about our disasterous choice for the next President of the United States. I find pretending he didn’t win always makes me happy.
