Howto fix slow internet after upgrade to Snow Leopard

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

After upgrading my 17″ MacBook Pro to Snow Leopard my internet became rather spotty. After a week or so of annoyance I have finally figured out the solution. Go to:

System Preferences -> Network -> Advanced -> DNS.

Now click the + button under DNS Servers and type in the address of your DHCP server (typically this is either your network router, firewall, or internet modem depending on network configuration).

Click OK then click Apply.

The reason this worked for me was I had multiple bogus DNS servers listed after my upgrade and these directions reset that. Hope this helps.

Installed Snow Leopard

Friday, August 28th, 2009

Got up early this morning to get a copy of Snow Leopard on day of release. So far my favourite things about Snow Leopard are the enormous speed increase in Time Machine backups and the scalable finder windows. (click image to enlarge)

AT&T and Apple Stores to open at 8am on July 11 to launch iPhone 3G

Monday, July 7th, 2008

It has been known for awhile that AT&T was going to open at 8am on July 11th to start selling the new iPhone, but today it was formally announced that Apple stores will also be opening at 8am for the launch (Apple stores usually open at 10am). This is an unprecedented move for Apple because throughout their retail history they have ALWAYS released new products at 6pm… interesting isn’t it?… I’m not sure what to make of it myself. The only question that remains is it better to go to AT&T or Apple to upgrade my phone? Who am I kidding(!) of course I’m going to the Apple store. See you all at the Bayshore Towne Centre Apple store for the launch. :)

Mac OS X Shortcuts part II

Friday, June 13th, 2008

I’ve been too busy the last month to work on creating a windows+L shortcut for Mac OS, but I thought I would go ahead and publish part two of my list of shortcuts that make my life so much better anyway. :)

You can find part one here.

————————————–

command + e

select a drive such as a flashdrive or DMG installer image on your desktop or in finder then use this command to unmount it (UNIX speak for ejecting it)

————————————–

command + delete

select item and press this to send it to the trash bin

————————————–

command + shift + delete

empty trash

————————————–

command + i

highlight a file, drive, directory, etc and then use this command to bring up the information window.

————————————–

command + z

this is a great one. If you accidentally move, rename, delete, etc to a file this will undo it. press command + z again and it will redo the operation. Similar in nature to Photoshop CS3.

————————————–

command + t

select a file, folder, smart folder, or program and use this to add it to the sidebar in finder.

————————————–

shift + command + n

this will create a new folder

————————————–

option + command + n

this will create a new smart folder.

————————————–

One a side note if you don’t currently use smart folders you’re really missing out! These are folders that don’t actually hold any files. Instead you can setup parameters and it will search your system in real time for files that match them. Think iTunes smart playlists but for everything on your system. For example, I have a smart folder on my desktop which contains every php, html, js, and css file modified in my development workspace during the current day and have my ftp client send that folder up into the cloud in the evening so I know any work completed that day was uploaded.

Happy shortcutting
