My new Rig – HD4850′s in CrossfireX

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Last night I picked up my second ATI HD4850, activated crossfireX, and put the two hd4850′s through the torture tests. Or so I thought… There is absolutely nothing these two cards combined can’t handle! I am in graphical bliss :)

Gaming and rendering speeds also helped by the fact I am running a quad-core AMD 9850 Black Edition, 4gb of Kingston HyperX @ 1066mhz, Vista Ultimate 64bit, ASUS M3a32-MVP Deluxe motherboard, server grade Seagate ES.2 harddrives in Raid 1, five case fans, and a 1KW Zalman power supply.

All of this put together means I will be able to render just about anything for my Thesis project which runs from essentially now until next May. Hurray! The only thing I need to get for thesis now is an Apple for modeling. I plan on modeling on an Apple Macbook Pro and then rendering on my new rig. It’ll save me a ton of time because I can be rendering WHILE modeling and vis versa. I’m calculating this combination should save me 13-20 hours a week in work time. Which means I might be able to actually get a decent amount of sleep during my last year of Grad school…. An unheard of feat in Architecture school… Those who have been in know what I mean. To put architecture school into perspective, law school would seem like it was not a busy schedule. The only other group I will give credit to for having as hard a curriculum as architects are the fellow poor souls in med school.

I obviously love all of my music so I recommend all of my posts’ “now playing songs” but the one below I have listened to now 13 times in a row! It’s an amazing song especially the beat that starts around 2’22″
