The death of “.com”
Friday, June 27th, 2008ICANN announced today they are in the process of setting up a new set of protocols which would allow cities and companies all over the world to setup their own extensions. For example instead of www.something.com it could be www.something.london, www.something.youtube, www.something.dodge, www.something.ebay, etc. This could finally be the solution we need to tie web addresses to the myriad of Ipv6 addresses that will be coming online over the next few years as ipv4 is phased out. It is expected the new system will be ready to go in 2009, and I speculate it will cause a paradigm shift in the structure of the internet and the format of e-commerce greater then anything we could possibly predict today.
